Habitat for Humanity helps hard-working mom realize dream  of home ownership

The Thanksgiving holiday has taken on a heightened sense of gratefulness for New Smyrna resident Angela Marshall. The single mother of five is on the path to home ownership thanks to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit Christian housing organization founded on the conviction that everyone should have a decent, safe, affordable place to live.

On Nov. 17, Marshall and two of her children, Arkeem Glass, 15, and Alicia Smiley, 5, moved into their new three-bedroom, two-bath spacious home surrounded by beautiful landscaping that Marshall herself helped lay sod to complete. PHILADELPHIA, PA. – ‘The City of Brotherly Love” welcomed delegates and a host of high-profile political leaders and celebrities for the 2016 Democratic National Convention that convened July 25-28 in the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Wells Fargo Arena.

The muted news is that Black women have been in the leadership trenches to organize the assembly.

Hacked and leaked
Democratic officials and cybersecurity company CrowdStrike Inc. said last month that hackers tied to the Russian government gained access to servers at the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

ThrDebbie Wassermanee days before the start of the party’s national convention, about 20,000 emails and other internal documents from the DNC were posted online by WikiLeaks.

Some of them showed the party favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. Consequently, South Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz was unceremoniously dumped from her DNC chair
manship.

Political analyst Donna Brazile is now interim chair of the party. Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, is permanent chair of the convention. The Reverend Leah Daughtry has twice served as the convention CEO. Continue Reading »

America’s racial climate deserves a seasonal calm. A monumental movement of protest has swept the nation following a string of Black-male homicides that angered multitudes and simultaneously created a new platform for dialogue amongst millennials – the next generation of potential law enforcement, judicial and education leaders.

“Sistas Coming Together” gathered 29 of the 47 young women of color           enrolled in Sioux City, Iowa’s racially disparate and socio-economic challenged West High School. Principal Jacque Wyant is in the front row, third from left.

Fatal shootings in America’s Black churches are not a historical phenomenon.

Alberta Williams King, the mother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was shot and killed in 1974 by Marcus Chenault, a lone, Black gunman. “Mama King’’ was murdered while playing the organ in the Ebenezer Baptist Church during a Sunday morning service.

The tragedy occurred in June and – 41 years later in the same month – Dylan Roof, a lone White gunman entered the Emmanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston and sat through a near hour of Bible study before he unloaded a barrage of bullets that killed nine congregants. Continue Reading »
