Taelor and Sydni Scott remember their father and ESPN anchor Stuart Scott with a delicate humor reserved for daughters only. Scott died of cancer in January at the age of 40. Earlier this month at the Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion in Orlando, the siblings shared with the Florida Courier intimate memories of a man who was much more than his signature catch-phrase: “Boo-ya!”

150918_metro02b“We were away from our dad a lot due to his job so we really treasured the limited time we had because he was so busy and it was difficult for him to make time,” said Taelor, a New York-based collegiate majoring in anthropology with a concentration in film.

“I really liked when he came home and took his many shirts, jackets, and ties and threw them down the steps,” said Taelor, who simultaneously was joined in laughter by younger sister Sydni. Continue Reading »

Seminar teaches residents how to increase chances of surviving shooting

BY PENNY DICKERSON
DAYTONA TIMES

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood grew up believing there were two places he always would be protected – school and church.

150813_dt_front01For recreation, movie theaters were favored. Today, none of them are safe havens and in the past three years, each has been a targeted location for tragic shooting sprees by lone gunmen.

In response to attacks at public places, the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) along with the Volusia County-Daytona Beach NAACP and the Black Clergy Alliance held a free community workshop on Aug. 6 to inform residents how to increase chances for survival if confronted with an active shooter.

“Shortly after the Charleston shootings, I was contacted by (NAACP President) Cynthia Slater about putting together a seminar for the churches and their staff to discuss being more secure and preventing copycat killings,” Chitwood told the Daytona Times this week. Continue Reading »

DAYTONA TIMES

The Daytona Beach Police Department has applied for grant funding that would allow it to purchase more body cameras for local law enforcement.

Earlier this year, 112 Daytona police officers were wearing the body-cams. Police Chief Michael Chitwood is seeking an additional 80 to ensure that his entire force is armed with the technology, which costs about $900 each, including storage and maintenance.

Last month, Chitwood formally submitted to the City of Daytona a “local submission and acceptance of a grant application” in an effort to apply for an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in the amount of $57,911 through the 2015 body-worn camera pilot program. The grant will be met with a cash match in the amount of $57,912. Continue Reading »
